How to find research data

You will find an overview of national and international databases and archives where you can search for research data below.

National solutions

Surveybanken (The Survey Bank)

Surveybanken (The Survey Bank) – Provides access to over 3,000 surveys and 750,000 questions conducted in Norway from 1957 to the present day. The Survey Bank is an open resource developed in collaboration between Sikt and OsloMet. The datasets are well-documented, including summaries, background information for the various surveys, the type of interviews conducted, publication dates, data collection periods, and other relevant details.

The Survey Bank works by allowing you to enter an open search in the search box, which then leads you to a results list of questions/variables, datasets, and data collections. From the results list, you can click into an analysis area where you get an overview of questions and variables, or you can go to the "Own Analysis" tab, where you can add more questions/variables from the survey and create your own analyses that are automatically visualized in custom charts based on your analysis. The visualizations can be downloaded and included in your work by citing the survey.

At Sikt, you can find several useful search tips and a simple tutorial video about the Survey Bank (Only in Norwegian).

Please note! Have you conducted a survey that might be relevant for the Survey Bank? All submitted surveys will be curated by Sikt's survey data experts, who will also engage in dialogue with the researchers behind the survey before the material is made available as part of the Survey Bank's collection. Read more about submitting data to Sikt.

International databases

There are several established international databases where you can search for and archive research data. Among these, there are databases open to all disciplines as well as those that are more subject-specific.

CESSDA (Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives)

Cessda – Cessda is an European Collaboration service that connects research data archives in the social sciences. The goal is to make it easier for researchers to access, share, and collaborate on data across borders.

In Norway, Sikt provides services related to CESSDA. Sikt helps researchers use CESSDA's resources and supports both national and international research.

PANGAEA

PANGAEA – A large database for research data within Earth and Environmental Sciences. All researchers in these fields can publish their data here.

Zenodo

Zenodo – Interdisciplinary, international database. Accepts research data from all over the world and across all disciplines. Also includes research publications. See the technical information.

Metadata archives

Many research data repositories allow their metadata to be harvested by dedicated metadata archives. Such archives can be useful both for finding specific research data and for identifying interesting repositories within various disciplines.

Re3Data

Re3Data – A large meta-registry of various research data repositories. It is possible to search for repositories based on country and research area. Collects metadata from everything ranging from large international repositories to smaller institutional repositories.

Google Dataset Search

Google Dataset Search – Google's search engine for finding research data.

DataCite

DataCite – Harvests metadata about research data from international repositories, including the USN Research Data Archive.

OpenAire

OpenAire – Harvests metadata about research publications and research data from various repositories.

Base (Bielefeld Academic Search Engine)

Base (Bielefeld Academic Search Engine) - A leading search engine for academic resources.
