Does the reference seem weird when placing it in Word? Please see the field codes settings in Word.

For Windows and MAC

• In Word: Go to File - Options - Advanced.
• Under Show document content: Check off Show field codes instead of their values.
• Click OK
   

If this doesnt help, try to:

• Restart both Word and Zotero.
• Highlight everything in the reference and delete it.
• Insert the reference again.

Sometimes the Zotero toolbar will be missing in Word. Here are some ways to find it.

Solution 1: For Windows and MAC

• In Zotero: Click Tools/Add-ons/Extensions.
• If Zotero Word for Windows/MAC Integration is Disabled, change it to Enable.
• If you can't click on Enable, click Remove, and restart Word.
• If you can't see Zotero Word for Windows/MAC Integration at all, try the solution below.

Solution 2: For Windows and MAC

• Close Word.
• In Zotero: Go to Edit/Preferences/Cite/Word Processors and click Reinstall Microsoft Word Add-in.
• If this didn't work, try downloading the Zotero program again. You do not have to uninstall/delete the existing version.
• If this doesn't work, try the solution below.

Solution 3: For Windows

• In Word: Go to File/Options/Customize ribbon and check off Developer Mode in the right column and click OK.
• In Word: Then go to File/Options/Add-ins and make sure you have the file Zotero.dotm in active add-ins.
• If you have the file Zotero.dotm: Go to File/Options/Trust Center and click Trust Center Settings.
• Under Add-ins: Make sure that Require Application Add-ins to be signed by Trusted Publisher and Disable all Application Add-ins is not checked off.
• Under Macro Settings: Disable all macros with notification should be chosen.
• Restart Word.

Solution 4: For MAC

• Update to Word 2016 or newer. Restart Word.
• In Word: If the toolbar is still missing, go to Word Preferences/View
• Check off Show Developer tab.
• Go to Add-ins and make sure that you have the file Zotero.dotm in active add-ins.
