Encyclopedias

Encyclopedias and dictionaries provide a quick and convenient overview for further information searching, whether you need the definiton of a word, to understand a sentence, or to check facts. We have gathered some of the reference works the library subscribes to as well as some useful free resources. You will also find printed reference books at your campus library.

The Encyclopedia Britannica online
You will need to log in when off campus. This gives you access to the full version of the world's largest encyclopedia. You can retrieve information from encyclopedias, periodicals, films and the internet.

Wikipedia.org
Free. It offers an encyclopedia in more than 200 languages, ​​made ​​up of contributions from volunteers around the world. Remember source criticism!

Dictionaries

Ordnett.no
You will need to log in when off campus. Kunnskapsforlaget's "blue" dictionaries and language resources, offer a language and dictionary service providing access to 47 electronic dictionaries, including a judicial encyclopedia and medical dictionary.

Oxford English Dictionary
You will need to log in when off campus. The Oxford English Dictionary is the largest and most popular dictionary of the English language. 

LEXIN dictionaries
Free. It includes dictionaries in many languages​​ and is intended for immigrants in Norway. They are the first online dictionaries designed specifically for minority languages in Norway.

Latin Dictionary and Grammar Aid
Free. A Latin language dictionary.

Yourdictionary.com
Free. This is a dictionary and encyclopedia with definitions, pronunciation and etymology.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary
Free. An online English dictionary and encyclopedia providing definitions, examples, pronunciation and etymological fun facts.

Access from home (Off campus)

USN students and staff have automatic access to the library's electronic resources when connected to the internet from USN's network. To use the databases when off campus, click the database title and log on using your USN username and password.
